The Importance of Nutrients in Hydroponics

Hydroponics is the act of growing plants in nutrient-rich water instead of the soil. It is considered to be safer and more sustainable than traditional farming methods, which require more resources and space. In some cases, the plants are first grown in alternative mediums, such as cocoa and stone wool, and then transferred into containers containing water and nutrients when the seedlings are old enough. Hydroponics may be the solution for plants that only grow in special types of soil. In this type of agriculture, the plants need more nutrients than usual since they are not planted in the soil.

Nutrients used in hydroponics

Hydroponics uses organic nutrients and plant boosters to grow plants.

Organic nutrients: These are absolutely essential in this type of agriculture. The organic nutrients contain components used in organic farming, but they are devoid of substances that can leave huge deposits. Since plants cannot absorb heavy particles, these substances can block the hydroponic system where the plants are being cultivated.

Plant Boosters: Plant boosters help the plants absorb nutrients in water more quickly and efficiently, promoting growth. There are certain hydroponics nutrients that can accelerate the flowering of plants, but you should avoid using them unless you have a big garden. Also, do not use advanced organic hydroponic nutrients without the guidance of professionals.

How to buy nutrients for your hydroponic gardens

You can purchase hydroponic kits online and also in retail stores nationwide. But it is best to buy from brick and mortar stores where you can get necessary instructions on how to use the kits.

Hydroponic nutrients should be added to the plants in such a way that they are completely absorbed. Once you have chosen a particular plant nutrient, make sure to stick to it as changing the nutrient types and brands is not good for the plants. Nutrients for indoor hydroponic vegetables need to be added systematically to ensure maximum absorption and proper growth of the plants.

How to know the right mix of hydroponic nutrients

It is important to know the right mix when purchasing organic nutrients for your garden. Hydroponic plants need the correct combination of macro and micronutrients for optimal growth. Macronutrients are required in large amounts and should be added to the plant throughout the year. On the other hand, micronutrients are needed in small quantities and should be applied once in a while. Examples of macronutrients are nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, sulphur, calcium, and magnesium. Examples of micronutrients are iron, manganese, chlorine, cobalt, molybdenum, zinc, nickel, and sodium.

pH factors and plant nutrients

The pH level of the water is also crucial for plants to grow properly. And this is easily altered by the addition of nutrients into the water or the presence of debris in the container. Therefore, you need a pH meter to check the acidity or alkalinity of the water every day.
